Battle of the Kids Books

March 1st, 2010 by eburns

School Library Journal (a magazine for teachers and librarians at www.schoollibraryjournal.com) is holding a purely for fun “battle of the kids books.”

Sixteen books are selected. At the first bracket, eight judges read two books each and select a winner who moves up the next bracket.

Those eight books in the second bracket are read by four judges who read two books each and select a winner, and so on, until only one book is left as Winner.

It’s a lot of fun, especially since the judges are authors of books for children and teens.

Information is at the Battle Website: http://sljbattleofthebooks.com/

The sixteen books are all 2009 titles; most are in the process of being made into Braille, digital book, and cassette. Requests cannot be made for books “in process.”

Some of these books are already available in commercial audiobook, that is, they are books that you can either buy yourself or borrow from a library.

At the Texas School for the Blind students juggle all the usual pressures of high school along with the added struggles of growing up blind. Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia & Vision

January 5th, 2010 by eburns

Thanks to the blog  Reading Rockets, I found an article called Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia, and Vision at http://www.readingrockets.org/article/35053. It says “vision problems are not the cause of dyslexia or learning disabilities”.

Reading Rockets’ short article is based on the longer article of the same name, Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia, and Vision prepared by The American Academy of Pediatrics, the Council on Children with Disabilities, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology and located at http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/reprint/124/2/837 If that link doesn’t work, try: http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/124/2/837

The original article explains, “Most people with dyslexia have a neurobiological deficit in the processing of the sound structure of language, called a phonemic deficit, which exists despite relatively intact overall language abilities,”  and “There is solid scientific evidence that supports the neurologic basis for the phonological coding deficit theory of reading disabilities.”

The article itself is seven pages, but well worth reading.

This article was published in the journal PEDIATRICS, an official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. It is peer reviewed.
